is on U.S.Highway 69, just north of Jacksonville, Texas:

. Bonnie and I stumbled on this scenic little rest stop this spring when returning home from a canoeing expedition on the Neches River in the Big Thicket. The upgrades and renovations mentioned in the article had been completed when we were there. Also on Highway 69 near Rusk is the small town of Alto (meaning "high"). There are numerous places in East Texas with the term Mountain or Mt. in their names, probably most named for a slight elevation in the vicinity. The oddest of all to me is the name Beaumont, or in English "Beautiful Mountain." Not a speck of land in the vicinity more than 10 feet above sea level ;-) !! Well, we were all spoiled, growing up in the "highlands" around Oak Cliff.
