that's the place with the master burger. There were several in the Dallas area, but the one on Hampton & Davis is the one I sampled most often, usually around one or two in the morning after a spell at either the Arlington State (it wasn't UTA until my senior year) or SMU libraries. I think there were Pitt Grills in other cities at one time -- I seem to recall hitting one in New Orleans once when I was in no shape to recall much. Maybe the Pitt Grill there was out in a suburb, rather than the city proper. I hope the burgers are still just as good, and that the place still serves both burgers and breakfast 24/7. I also recall that at the one on Hampton at least, hash browns were cut and cooked when ordered. The cook put a little metal ring on the grill, filled it with freshly chopped potatoes, and poured grease in from a pitcher. Wonder what that grease was -- likely the grease off the grill from cooking the burgers and bacon -- Ha! But I sure liked those hash browns. Usually had them with a burger, rather than french fries.

How was I wrong concerning Jamie's, Jerry? Was it the location (not on Cedar Springs) or something else? It was in that neighborhood, at least. Maybe on Lemon Avenue. Inquiring minds want to know.

Don't remember Charcoal's Drive In. Back in the day, when I wanted to go across for a burger, I went to Jamie's, or rarely to the other Kip's, the one on Northwest Highway, just because it was "over there." But I didn't relish Kip's burgers at all. Might have liked them better with mustard rather than "Kip's special sauce," which resembled thousand island dressing. Back then, for some reason, I didn't realize that one could simply ask for a burger prepared the way one wanted it! Ha Ha! There was a drive in in Pleasant Grove, or near there, that had the old style burgers with grill toasted buns, and really weird non-carbonated soft drinks. It wasn't good, but lots of people went there. Fights were common there between Oak Cliff guys and those rough types from W.W. Samuels H.S.
